case1 Revano Satria: Cellular Solid Morphologies

Cellular solids occur frequently in nature, examples include the more porous centers of human bone, the ever studied honeycomb and dense woods or sponges. Cellular solids have been adopted as inspiration for engineering materials in recent years and are becoming more prevalent in construction.

Natural cellular solids have the ability to adapt to specific external forces within their surrounding environment. In this design, the sun is simulated in computational experiments as an external environmental force, generating site-specific geometry.

Beginning with two-dimensional geometries, an algorithm was developed, called a Global Sun Exposure algorithm, which takes the data of the suns path on the site as a parameter in the generation of cell formation, minimizing sun exposure throughout the entire body of the object.

The second algorithm, a Local Sun Exposure algorithm, calculates and compares the area of the cell bodies that have a high ratio of sun exposure with those with low sun exposure. The cells then readjust their positions toward the direction of the sun in order to minimize exposure.

case2 MAD Architects Look to the Honeycomb

MAD Architects have designed a tower and hotel to be built in Beijing inspired by the honeycomb nature of beehives. What seems like an undulating facade from far away is actually a regular grid of equally sized hexagons but with varying degrees of opening.

Below is an exploded diagram illustrating the components that go into what seems like a simple facade

Below is an illustration showing how the thermal analysis rendered the pattern on the facade as a direct response to heat gain.

Regulation of thermal gain and optimum degree of light dictated the pattern across the entire building. The facade alsoacts as structural support freeing up the interiors and allowing for more open spaces.
